Japanese outdoor brand Yamatomichi has released the Wind Zip Hoody, an ultralight unisex hooded wind jacket weighing 60 g in size XS and 75 g in XL. The technical wind shell uses different Pertex fabrics on the front, back, hood, sleeves, sides, and underarms to vary wind resistance and air permeability across the garment.
Zoned Pertex construction
Yamatomichi designed the Wind Zip Hoody with three Pertex fabric placements treated with C0 durable water repellent (DWR), which the brand identifies as PFAS-free. Yamatomichi says the layout is intended to balance wind protection and breathability across the garment.
The front body, sides of the hood, and outer sleeves use 24 g/m² Pertex Quantum. According to data published by Yamatomichi, the fabric has an air-permeability rating of no more than 1 cc/cm²/s, tear strength of 1.1 kg warp and 1.8 kg weft, and tensile strength of 24 kg warp and 22 kg weft.
The back and center of the hood use 24 g/m² Pertex Quantum Air. The brand reports air permeability of 20–50 cc/cm²/s, tear strength of 1.4 kg warp and 2.0 kg weft, and tensile strength of 24 kg warp and 22 kg weft.
At the side panels and underarms, Yamatomichi uses 46 g/m² Pertex Quantum Air. Its published figures list air permeability of at least 50 cc/cm²/s, tear strength of 1.0 kg warp and 1.1 kg weft, and tensile strength of 29 kg warp and 26 kg weft.
Hood, cuffs, and fit
The Wind Zip Hoody has a roomy cut that Yamatomichi says helps ventilation, plus a SAB #3 coil zipper. Its hood places the more wind-resistant fabric around the sides and the more air-permeable fabric through the center. A firmer material at the neck is designed to help the collar stand, with wind-resistant fabric on its reverse side.
Each cuff closes with a snap. Opening it makes the sleeve easier to roll up; fastening it creates a thumbhole. The garment is made in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
